Dance Dance Revolution + Dance Pad on Steam Deck?!

Important: A USB dongle is REQUIRED in ordered to play with the dance pad. I understand I'm being captain obvious here, but I know some of you guys are gonna suffer from FOMO watching this video. If you haven't bought a dock yet for your Steam Deck, do it ASAP! Or do it when your order your dance pad!

  • Get DDR on your Deck

    • Unfortunately I cannot go into detail on where or how to get DDR on your Steam Deck. There are tons of helpful articles and tutorials out there on emulation for your Steam Deck. Once you do that, you can move on to step #2!

  • Buy a USB Dance Pad!
Now, I've only had experience with ONE dance pad. I don't have the resources to purchase all of the dance pads to see which ones work and which ones don't.

I've put the link in the description for the dance pad I bought off of Amazon. I literally just typed in "USB Dance Dance Revolution Dance Pad"

When I received the dance pad, the instructions for this pad said that it only worked for W7/8/10. I immediately got worried that I just wasted money buying this pad. But when I went into the Steam OS hardware options, it was showing that the controller was registering each time I pressed a button, so obviously it was working.

Another interesting thing is that the pad came with a CD-ROM for StepMania, which is a dancing game you can get for the PC AND for Linux based PCs. I didn't try to download StepManic because it looked pretty confusing, I'm sure there are people out there who can figure that out. For this video, we will just stick to the emulated DDR games on the Steam Deck.

Step #1 - Switch to Desktop Mode

  • Click settings > input devices > controller >device drop down men u and select > USB gamepad - test that the pad is working.

Step #2 - Configure Dance Pad in Steam

  • Steam > settings > controller > general controller settings > your USB controller should show up as "Generic GamePad"

  • Click on "Define Layout"

  • Go ahead and start with the DPAD buttons. Click on each and them step on the corresponding button on the pad you want assigned.

  • Then click on the primary action-I set as X, go back I set as circle, Tertiary I set as Triangle and Secondary as Square.

  • Start is start and then Guide is Select

  • Return to Gaming Mode

Step #3 - Configure Dance Pad in DuckStation

  • Settings > Controller Icon > Controller Type > Digital Controller > Click on each arrow direction and press it on your gamepad

Exit out of DuckStation and click on any of your DDR games and you should be able to play with your Dance Pad!
